South Plainfield 12, St. Joseph (Met.) 5 (High school Baseball scores and results)
The Star Ledger, May 06, 2010 10:25 p.m.
A mere 24 hours after St. Joseph was awarded the top seed in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament, with South Plainfield seeded second, that order was reversed on the scoreboard.
Brandon Downes cracked a grand slam in a six-run second inning to spark South Plainfield, No. 5 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, to a 12-5 victory over No. 1 St. Joseph yesterday in South Plainfield.
The victory was the 16th in a row for South Plainfield (18-1) since its lone setback, a one-run loss to No. 7 Monroe on April 5. The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for St. Joseph (15-4), which suffered its first loss to a Middlesex County foe this year.
South Plainfield sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning, as Downes belted his 10th home run of the season and Rob Pasternak and Kyle Hughes each drove in a run with a single.
St. Joseph had taken a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Victor Diaz but squandered an opportunity for more by leaving the bases loaded.
South Plainfield received run-scoring singles by Downes and
and Mark Benak in the third and by Matt Cesare and Stephen Petriello in the fifth.
St. Joseph's last four runs came on a two-run homer by Eric Peterson in the third and another two-run shot by Shane Alvarez in the fourth.
