Outlook:
South Plainfield returns its entire infield, two thirds of its outfield and three starting pitchers. The Tigers must find a new battery to replace ace Jean Sapini (1.69 ERA, 6-2 REC, 58 IP, 71 K, 21 BB, 14 ER, 41 H) and catcher Jared Marks (.281, 25 H, 12 RBI). A quartet of players are vying to succeed Marks behind the dish. Fleet-footed center fielder Connor Adams (.506 BA, 45 H, 4 2B, 25 R, 7 RBI) returns as the division’s leading hitter. TJ Massaro, who did not commit an error in 49 chances last season, is also back in the outfield. Billy Keane is one of the conference’s best all-around players, finishing last season among the division’s leaders on the mound (2.82 ERA, 2-4 REC, 39.2 IP, 27 K, 7 BB, 16 ER, 36 H) and at the plate (.403 BA, 31 H, 7 2B, 8 R, 11 RBI). Returning starters Mike Marrero (.385 BA, 20 H, 1 2B, 14 R, 10 RBI) and Rob Gonzalez (.326 BA, 28 H, 4 2B, 1 3B, 16 R, 10 RBI) were South Plainfield’s top hitting infielders a year ago.
