SEEDING COMMITTEE: Athletics Directors from Old Bridge (Dan DiMino), Woodbridge (Joe Ward), South River (Carl Buffalino), East Brunswick Tech (Mike Pede), along with coaches from Colonia (Vinny Esposito) and South Amboy (Dan Poulsen) comprise the seeding committee, with each receiving a vote. Should a tie exist in voting, Monroe Athletics Director Greg Beyer, who oversees the seeding committee as the conference’s baseball committee chairman, will cast the tie-breaking vote.

Game #20 Morristown 11 South Plainfield 2

David Haberman went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI to lead Morristown to an 11-2 win over South Plainfield at TD Bank Park in Bridgewater.

Luke Schulte went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI for Morristown. Matt Nodoro singled and drove in two runs, while Lucas Reida had two hits and an RBI in the win.

GMC baseball Top 10 rankings for May 6

1. Woodbridge (15-3): The Barrons snapped a three-game losing streak with consecutive two-run victories over South Plainfield and Bishop Ahr, erasing a one-run deficit in the sixth inning against the latter on Harry Rutkowski’s three-run homer. Woodbridge can win the White Division title with a victory over North Brunswick on Monday.

2. East Brunswick (13-4): The Bears rebounded from a 10-4 loss to Old Bridge with a five-game winning streak. East Brunswick has blanked its last three opponents and its pitching staff has a string of 26 consecutive scoreless innings. East Brunswick split a series with St. Joseph. It has a key Red Division series with Monroe on Monday and Tuesday. The Bears can guarantee themselves at least a share of the Red Division title with a sweep of Monroe. The combination of a sweep of Monroe and St. Joseph splitting its series with South Brunswick would allow East Brunswick to win the title outright. The combination of South Brunswick sweeping St. Joseph and East Brunswick splitting with Monroe would also allow the Bears to win the title outright.

3. St. Joseph (14-8): St. Joseph, which has won seven of its last nine, going 7-0 in conference action during that stretch, had a four-game winning streak snapped in a 4-2 loss to Bayonne on Saturday night. St. Joseph still has the fewest conference losses (two) – the Falcons split with East Brunswick and Monroe – of any league member. Their five other losses are to perennial state powers St. Joseph of Montvale, Bergen Catholic, St. Peter’s Prep, Pope John and Paramus Catholic. St. Joseph can clinch at least a share of the Red Division title with a series sweep of South Brunswick. The Falcons can win the Red Division title outright with a sweep of the Vikings and if East Brunswick and Monroe split their series.

4. South Plainfield (13-6): The Tigers bounced back from a 4-2 loss to Woodbridge with a doubleheader sweep of J.F. Kennedy on Saturday. In doing so, South Plainfield kept alive its slim chances for a share of the White Division title. A combination of a North Brunswick win over Woodbridge and a series sweep by either Colonia or Sayreville in a two-game set between those schools would result in three teams – Woodbridge, South Plainfield and either Sayreville or Colonia – finishing with identical 8-4 division records, meaning all three schools would share the division crown. Should Sayreville and Colonia split their series, South Plainfield could share the title with Woodbridge if the Barrons lose to North Brunswick.

5. Spotswood (15-3): The reigning Blue Division champions have won 13 of their last 14 with the lone blemish a 3-0 setback to Middlesex, which Spotswood avenged with a 4-2 win over the Blue Jays to claim its first division title in a decade.

6. Monroe (10-5): The Falcons have won five straight, positioning themselves for a chance to win the Red Division title. Four of Monroe’s losses are by a single run. Monroe can win the Red Division title outright with a sweep of East Brunswick and a South Brunswick sweep of St. Joseph. Monroe would share the division title with St. Joseph if St. Joseph splits with South Brunswick and Monroe sweeps East Brunswick.

7. Middlesex (16-4): Middlesex has lost 6-5 to Piscataway, 8-7 to Metuchen, 6-4 to South Plainfield and 4-2 to Spotswood. The Blue Jays split their season series with Spotswood. Middlesex has out-of-division wins over Sayreville, South Brunswick, North Brunswick and J.P. Stevens.

8. Colonia (9-9): The Patriots have won five of their last six, sandwiching sweeps of Piscataway and North Brunswick around a series split with J.F. Kennedy.

9. South Brunswick (10-9): The Vikings look to snap a six-game losing streak on Monday against St. Joseph.

10T. Sayreville (7-8): After sweeping Woodbridge and wining the first of a two-game set with J.F. Kennedy, the Bombers fell to the Mustangs and St. Joseph.

10T. Old Bridge (7-11): The Knights have quality wins over East Brunswick and Monroe and quality arms in Jake Kodros and Joe Papeo, both of whom continue to keep Old Bridge in games. The Knights have lost three of their last five, sandwiching a great win over St. Augustine Prep between a series split with J.P. Stevens and getting swept by St. Joseph.

10T. Piscataway (10-8): The Chiefs have quality wins over South Plainfield, Sayreville and Middlesex.

On the bubble: Metuchen (11-5) has won 10 in a row including a victory over Middlesex.

Rob Gonzalez threw a seven-hitter over five innings with seven strikeouts and three walks for South Plainfield in a 6-5 win over Iselin Kennedy in Iselin.

South Plainfield led 5-0 after five innings. Mike Stanczak brought in one run and scored one while Ricky Pellegrino went 2-for-3 and scored twice in the win.

Jordy Mora went 2-for-2 and brought in two runs for Iselin Kennedy.

Winning pitcher Chris Shine went the distance, fanning seven and allowing two hits while walking none.

Jared Marks had two RBI, while Billy Keane and Mike Marrero each went 2-for-3 and plated a run. Connor Adams scored twice. Marrero and Dylan O’Connor also crossed home.

Hakim Hamer and Michael Matusz had the lone hits for J.F. Kennedy.

South Plainfield 6, J.F. Kennedy 5

After squandering a 5-0 first-inning lead, the Tigers scored in the home sixth to snap a 5-5 tie.

Ricky Pellegrino, Connor Adams, Mike Stanczak and Billy Keane had two hits apiece for South Plainfied. Pellegrino and teammate TJ Massaro each scored twice. South Plainfield’s David Tavarez and Stanczak each doubled.

Jordy Mora went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI for the Mustangs. Teammate Vivek Patel scored three times and singled twice. Jake Heyer and Kevin Schaefer each scored for J.F. Kennedy.

The Mustangs were outhit 12-7.

Harry Rutkowski allowed one earned run and struck out nine batters over seven innings for Woodbridge in its 4-2 win over South Plainfield.

Rutkowski also went 2-for-3 with a home run,one run scored and one RBI, and Justin Silva went 1-for-3 with a homer, one run scored and one RBI for Woodbridge.

Winning pitcher Harry Rutkowksi went the distance, fanning nine and allowing one earned run over seven innings to help the Barrons (14-3) snap a three-game losing streak.

With the victory, Woodbridge improved to 8-3 in the White Division and can claim the division title with a win over last-place North Brunswick in its division finale.

Rutkowski helped his own cause, going 2-for-3 with his state-leading eighth home run of the season, a blast estimated at 450-feet that sailed into the trees beyond the left-field fence.
Justin Silva went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for Woodbridge, while teammate Carlos Marte also singled and scored a run.

Connor Adams had a single and an RBI for South Plainfield (11-6). Rob Gonzalez doubled and scored for the Tigers.

Losing pitcher Billy Keane allowed four earned runs on seven hits. He fanned four and walked two.

Jean Sapini pitched a seven-hitter allowing only one earned run and one walk while striking out nine to give South Plainfield an upset 5-3 victory over Woodbridge, No. 11 in the NJ.com Top 20, in South Plainfield.

Chris Shine, Robert Gonzalez, Mike Marrero, Connor Adams, and Sapini all tallied an RBI each for the Tigers, which scored four runs in the second and one in the third to go up 5-0 at the time.

Dylan O'Connor, Billy Keane, and Sapini all notched two hits apiece as well.

For the Barrons, Justin Silva went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

The Tigers scored four runs in the second inning and winning pitcher Jean Sapini made them stand up with a complete-game effort.

Sapini fanned nine, scattered seven hits, allowed three runs (one earned) and walked one. He threw 107 pitches while improving his personal mark to 4-1. Sapini helped his own cause, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Dylan O’Connor went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for South Plainfield, while teammate Billy Keane singled twice and scored. Chris Shine, Rob Gonzalez and Mike Marrero contributed a hit, a run and an RBI apiece to the win.

Zach Joe and Carlos Marte each went 2-for-4 with a run for the Barrons (13-3), who have dropped three straight.

South Plainfield’s victory coupled with Sayreville’s win over J.F. Kennedy has created a dogfight for first place in the White Division. Woodbridge (7-3 division) leads by one game in the win column over the Tigers and Bombers, who have identical 6-3 division marks.

Woodbridge was outhit 10-7. Michael Medvetz had a single and scored for the Barrons.

1. Woodbridge (13-2): The Barrons had a 13-game winning streak snapped in consecutive losses to Sayreville – 4-3 and 6-1 – that left Woodbridge with a slim two-game lead in the victory column over South Plainfield for first place in the White Division. Woodbridge and South Plainfield will play a two-game series on Monday and Tuesday. The Barrons can clinch the division title with a sweep.

2. East Brunswick (10-4): The Bears, who are 8-2 in the division, split their regular-season series with Old Bridge and St. Joseph. East Brunswick’s only other losses are to Woodbridge in 13 innings and 7-5 to Shore Conference power Jackson Memorial in the Autism Awareness Baseball Challenge. The Red Division-leading Bears have a two-game set with South Brunswick on Monday and Tuesday that will factor into the division title race.

3. St. Joseph (9-6): The Falcons, who are 7-2 in the Red Division, split their regular-season series with East Brunswick and Monroe, accounting for their only division losses. St. Joseph has played the toughest schedule of any GMC school with its four other defeats at the hands of perennial state powers St. Joseph of Montvale, Bergen Catholic, Pope John and Paramus Catholic. The Falcons currently trail division-leading East Brunswick by one game in the win column. St. Joseph, which has hurled a conference-best six shutouts, has blanked its last three opponents and will put its streak of 21 consecutive scoreless innings on the line against streaking Perth Amboy on Monday.

4. South Brunswick (10-5): The Vikings have dropped three of their last five and enter this week’s action after losing a pair of games in the seventh-inning to Perth Amboy. South Brunswick’s other losses are 7-6 to Skyland Conference power Montgomery, a 1-0 upset to Edison and a 2-0 defeat to Robbinsville and ace Jordan Winston, a Oklahoma State University signee.

5. South Plainfield (10-4): The Tigers, who had a four-game winning streak snapped in a lost to West Morris, rebounded with a 6-4 comeback win over Middlesex against which it rallied for five runs in the fourth inning to erase a 4-1 deficit. The Tigers split White Division series with Colonia and North Brunswick, the latter of which rallied for three runs in the seventh for a walk-off victory. South Plainfield can keep alive its division title hopes by at least salvaging a split in a series with division-frontrunner Woodbridge on Monday and Tuesday.

6. Spotswood (14-2): The Chargers extended their winning streak to 12 games with a series sweep of South River that allowed them to take sole possession of first place in the Blue Division by one game over Middlesex. Spotswood and the Blue Jays square off in a series on Monday and Tuesday that will decide the division champion.

7. Middlesex (14-2): After rallying for five seventh-inning runs in a dramatic 8-7 walk-off victory over Sayreville, the Blue Jays had their five-game winning streak snapped with a 6-4 loss to South Plainfield, which outscored the Bombers 15-4 in a White Division series sweep. Middlesex scored twice in the sixth inning to break a 6-6 deadlock in an 8-6 victory over North Brunswick, which was outscored 13-5 in a series loss to Sayreville.

8. Sayreville (6-6): The Bombers entered a series with Woodbridge, which they swept, having dropped three of their last four games with each defeat by a single run. Sayreville remains in contention for the White Division title.  Sayreville opened the year with a 2-3 record. The Bombers were outscored 25-4 in those three losses, but have obviously rebounded.

9. Monroe (7-5): After a lopsided loss to St. Joseph in early April, the Falcons have dropped four more games, all by a single run to perennial state power Steinert, Old Bridge, Spotswood and South Brunswick. Monroe has scored 33 runs in its last three victories. Monroe avenged a 3-2 loss to Old Bridge with a 7-0 win the following day.

10. Old Bridge (6-10): The Knights’ stock rose with an impressive 10-4 victory over East Brunswick and a 1-0 upset of St. Augustine, which The Star Ledger of Newark ranked No. 10 in the state at the time. Old Bridge, whose schedule has been nearly as difficult as that of St. Joseph, has lost four games by a single run.

ON THE BUBBLE

Metuchen (7-5): The Bulldogs, along with Gold Division-leading East Brunswick Tech, which remains the conference’s lone undefeated team, are the league’s hottest club. Metuchen has won seven in a row, a streak that commenced with a walk-off victory over previously undefeated Middlesex.

Perth Amboy (4-8): The Panthers made a huge statement, sweeping a series from South Brunswick, rallying for consecutive wins, both in the seventh inning. After opening the year with an eight-game losing streak, the Panthers, who have four one-run losses, have won four of their last five.

Piscataway rallied from a 7-0 deficit and scored nine in the bottom of the 4th to take the lead in a 13-10 win over South Plainfield in South Plainfield.

James Ingram and Chris Lowry both went 3-for-4 for Piscataway, which got 16 hits, including five straight to start that nine-run fourth inning. Chris Corvil earned the win after pitching 2 2/3 innings in relief after coming into the game in the top of the fifth.

Piscataway 13, South Plainfield 10

The Chiefs rallied for nine runs in the home fourth to erase a 7-0 deficit and tacked on four more runs in the sixth to put the contest out of reach.

The teams combined for 31 hits, six walks, 11 errors and 20 runners left on base.

James Ingram and Chris Lowry each went 3-for-4 with three RBI for Piscataway, while teammates Joe Maisano, Justin Mckewon and Parris Washington had two hits apiece and each scored a run. Jordan Brown, John Swier, Maisano and Mckeown contributed one RBI apiece to the victory.

Connor Adams (4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI) and Billy Keane (3-for-4 with two RBI and a run) were South Plainfield’s hitting stars. Jared Marks (RBI) and Dylan O’Connor (double and a run) each went 2-for-3. Jean Sapini singled twice and scored twice for the Tigers.

Only four of the runs Piscataway (9-6) allowed were earned. The Tigers fell to 10-5.

One of three Chiefs who pitched in the contest, Chris Corvil (two and two thirds innings) earned the victory. Starter Jason Mahmood pitched three innings and Jason Vitalicio hurled an inning and a third of relief.

Dylan O'Connor doubled and drove in two runs to lead South Plainfield over Middlesex, 6-4, in South Plainfield.

Mike Stanczak and Connor Adams drove in a run and scored a run apiece while Rob Gonzalez singled and drove in a run for South Plainfield, which scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after allowing four in the top.

Billy Keane and Chris Shine singled and scored a run apiece while Jared Marks scored once for South Plainfield, which stranded seven runners on base.

South Plainfield 6, Middlesex 4

The Tigers rallied for five runs in the home fourth to erase a 4-1 deficit and hand the Blue Jays (13-2) just their second loss of the season.

Dylan O’Connor highlighted the outburst with a two-run double. South Plainfield teammate Mike Stanczak went 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI and a run. Connor Adams, Jean Sapini, Billy Keane and Chris Shine each had a hit and scored.

Winning pitcher Mike Marrero hurled three and a third scoreless innings. He scattered three hits, fanned one and did not walk a batter. Rob Gonzalez started for South Plainfield.

Jack Hnylycia went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for Middlesex, while teammates Mike Salerno and Matt Carovillano each had a hit and a run.

Carovillano and Nick DiMaggio each doubled for the Blue Jays, who scored four times in the top of the fourth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit.

Middlesex was outhit 8-4 and committed four defensive miscues that resulted in four unearned runs.

Patrick Kannaley went the distance on the mound for the Blue Jays. He fanned three and walked one in a 100-pitch effort.

Quincy West scored for Middlesex.

Game #13 West Morris 8 South Plainfield 5

Matthew Blount doubled and brought in two runs as West Morris beat South Plainfield, 8-5, in Chester.

Jackson Yeatts gave up two hits, struck out four and walked two over 4 2/3 innings for West Morris, which scored six runs in the sixth inning to erase a 5-2 deficit. Andrew Pinelli scored and drove in two runs. Kevin Kennedy and Connor Staine both recorded an RBI and scored.
 
Chris Shine went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Jean Sapini hit two doubles, and Rob Gonzalez scored and drove in two on a double.

The Tigers (9-4) had their 4-game winning streak snapped. 

 

West Morris (5-7) scored six runs in the home sixth to erase a 5-2 deficit.  Each team had seven hits.
