All-Area Team 2012
Mark Tomei
The senior outfielder belted a teamleading 18 extra-base hits including eight doubles, seven triples and three homers. Despite batting leadoff, Tomei finished third on the club with 18 RBI. He fanned just six times in 116 plate appearances. Tomei blended power with speed, stealing a team-high nine bases in 12 attempts. He scored 39 runs. The South Plainfield star also had five outfield assists.
Stephen Petriello
South Plainfield’s senior was widely regarded among the state’s best defensive catchers. He tallied 13 assists and committed just four errors in 134 chances. Petriello was no slouch at the plate, leading the Tigers with a .471 average and 41 hits. He boasted a .566 OBP with 15 walks. Petriello had a .747 slugging percentage with 16 doubles, a triple and two homers. He was second on the team with 31 runs and 19 RBI.
