Baseball Recap: South Plainfield Tigers vs. Sayreville Bombers
By Team Reports

May 9, 2026, 12:13am

South Plainfield dropped to 11-12 on Friday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins on the road. They fell just short of the Sayreville Bombers by a score of 5-4. The Tigers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bombers apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2025.

As for Sayreville, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-13-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted against South Plainfield since May 10, 2016.

For Sayreville's part, Chase Cannan made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. The dominant performance also gave Cannan a new career-high in strikeouts (three). He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run and one stolen base. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season.

In other batting news, Justin Maher was excellent, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. KJ Stevens was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. South Plainfield will take on Red Bank Catholic at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Caseys' pitching crew has only allowed 4.1 runs per game this season, so the Tigers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Sayreville, they will be playing at home against North Hunterdon at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
