The Greater Middlesex Conference Senior All-Star Game, which will take place 5 p.m. today at East Brunswick Tech, has always been an opportunity for baseball players, especially from the Gold Division, to shine.
Since South Amboy reached the conference tournament finals in 2006, becoming the first division member to do so, the Gold Division gained a new level of respect.
Players representing the division in today's game will try to continue to prove that they deserve to be considered among the conference's elite.
"The game gives the Gold Division boys an opportunity for other players in the county to see that there are players that could compete," Cardinal McCarrick coach Frank Notaro said. "There are several that could play up in other divisions.
"No players from the Gold Division, which will be paired with the White Division to face a squad of seniors from the Red and Blue Divisions in today's all-star game, were named to the all-conference team.
Gold Division champion South Amboy has the most representatives in the game with four. They include pitchers Craig Warzecha and Mario Batista and outfielders Joe Charmello and Christian Geant.
Crosstown rival Cardinal McCarrick will showcase pitcher Joe Lunger and outfielder Carlos Napoles in the game, while designated hitter Matt Heimall and infielder Nick Rivera will represent host East Brunswick Tech.
All proceeds from the event will benefit Bristol Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
South Plainfield's Anthony Guida, the GMC's 2010 Coach of the Year who spent the 2007-08 seasons as Dunellen's head coach, said he looks forward to seeing the Gold Division players in today's game.
"There are a lot of good athletes there as we've seen in the last couple years," Guida said. "There are a lot of good players, and when they get out in that (all-star) type of atmosphere, it's nice for them to get that experience."
