Baseball: South Plainfield Falls to Elizabeth, 10-5, in Regular Season Finale; State Tournament Starts Tuesday

Tigers to host Rahway in State Tournament opener Tuesday

By TAPinto South Plainfield Staff

ELIZABETH, NJ -- The South Plainfield baseball team concluded its regular season with a 10-5 loss to Elizabeth on the road on Saturday morning.

Although the Tigers (14-10) fell behind, 7-0, after two innings, they swung the bats impressively against one of Union County's best pitchers.

Tall right-hander Albert Maldonado just a week ago held New Jersey's best team, Gov. Livingston, to one run and three hits in six innings in a 1-0 loss to GL in the Union County Tournament semifinals last Saturday. But South Plainfield got six hits and three runs against Maldonado in three innings on Saturday.

Dan Kapsch went 3-for-4 with two RBI for South Plainfield. Nick Irizarry was 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Tigers. Dom Massaro, who was 1-for-4 with an RBI, had South Plainfield's only extra-base hit, a double.

Massaro is batting .412, the leading batting average on the team.

Lorenzo Fuscoletti and Chris Loniewski each had run-scoring hits in the loss. Senior right-hander Ryan Balent pitched two hitless innings in relief for South Plainfield, allowing just one baserunner on a walk.

South Plainfield has been seeded third for the NJSIAA North 2, Group 3 tournament, which begins on Tuesday. The Tigers will host 14th-seeded Rahway in a first-round game at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Colonia is the top seed and Millburn the No. 2 seed in the section.
