No-hitter leads South Plainfield over Rahway in N2G3 1st round
Mike Castagna and Ed Budzinski threw a combined no-hitter to guide third-seeded South Plainfield to a 15-0 victory over 14th-seeded Rahway in the first round of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 playoffs in South Plainfield.
Castagna went three innings while striking out five and walking none, while Budzinski pitched two innings and struck out two and walked none.
Kevin Penny led the offense by going a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Nick Irizarry, Aiden McCarthy and Steve Studlack each came around to score twice.
Yeremy Hernandez allowed just two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts in two innings for Rahway (5-16).
South Plainfield (15-10) will host sixth-seeded Cranford in the quarterfinals. Cranford defeated Chatham to advance to the quarterfinals.

(3) South Plainfield 15, (14) Rahway 0 (5 innings): Mike Castagna and Ed Budzinski combined on the five-inning no-hitter and South Plainfield jumped to an 8-0 lead after the first inning.
Castagna struck out five in three innings and Budzinski struck out two in two innings for the Tigers (15-10). Neither pitcher walked anybody and South Plainfield made two errors.
Kevin Penny was 2-for-2 with three RBIs, Aidan McCarthy was 3-for-4 and scored twice and Nick Irizarry was 2-for-2 (RBI, 2 runs) to pace South Plainfield. Jack Jones doubled and had two RBIs and having a hit apiece were Dom Massaro (RBI, run, two SBs), Dan Kapsch (RBI), Dylan Oller (RBI) and Ryan Balent (run).

With a playoff win on the line, South Plainfield rose to the challenge on Tuesday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Rahway Indians a 15-0 shutout. That 15 run margin sets a new team best for the Tigers this season.
South Plainfield has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-9 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games. As for Rahway, they are on an 11-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 5-17.

South Plainfield Romps Over Rahway, 15-0, in State Tournament Opener

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ -- A combined five-inning no-hitter and a huge first inning carried third-seeded South Plainfield to a 15-0 baseball victory over 14th-seeded Rahway in the first round of the NJSIAA North 2, Group 3 tournament on Tuesday.
Mike Castagna and Ed Budzinski combined on the no-hitter, with Castagna, a senior right-hander, striking out five and walking none in three innings, and Budzinski, a junior lefty, striking out two batters in two innings without a walk. There were only two Rahway baserunners in the game, both getting on base on errors.
In the bottom of the first inning, South Plainfield scored two runs on errors, one on a sacrifice fly by Lorenzo Fuscoletti, another on Chris Loniewski's sacrifice fly, two on run-scoring singles by Kevin Penny and Nick Irizarry, one on a passed ball and another on an infield error.
Penny went 2-for-2 with three runs batted in, Aiden McCarthy was 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI, Irizarry was 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI, and Dan Kapsch and Jack Jones each had one hit and two RBI.
