Starting pitcher Jordan Hamberg and reliever Ryan Massett combined on a five-hit shutout as the South Plainfield High School baseball team blanked Colonia 6-0 to deliver the 200th career victory for veteran head coach Antony Guida.

Guida, who became the Tigers head coach in 2009, led South Plainfield to its first Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament championship last season. In 2015, he guided the Tigers to their first state title since 1975.

He is now the fifth active coach in the Greater Middlesex Conference to win 200 or more games. The impressive list includes Edison’s Vinnie Abene, Sayreville’s Mike Novak, Spotswood’s Glenn Fredricks and South River’s Mike Lepore.

South Plainfield has enjoyed winning campaigns in eight of Guida's 10 seasons at the helm.  In six of those seasons, the Tigers have won at least 20 games.

Guida graduated from Monroe High School and Rowan University. He played outfield at both places. He previously served as the head coach at Dunellen.
Against Colonia on Thursday, the Tigers rallied for four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.

Ashwin DeGroot, who went 3-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI, delivered the biggest hit of the inning.

Michael Marrero went 2-for-4, while teammates TJ Massaro, Rob Gonzalez, Chris Born and Sammy Nieves each scored a run.

Hamberg struck out five, walked five and allowed four hits over five and two thirds innings. Massett pitched an inning and a third out of the pen, fanning two, walking one and allowing one hit.

Matt Flammia went 2-for-4 for the Patriots, while teammates Kenny Shinski, Noah Ruiz and Nick Nielson each had a hit.
