 Robinson leads way as South Plainfield rallies by No. 19 Old Bridge

Senior Zack Robinson drove in a pair of runs on two singles as South Plainfield rallied for a 6-3 road win in Matawan over Old Bridge, the No. 19 team in the NJ.com Top 20.

South Plainfield trailed 3-0 after two innings but scored four in the fifth, then two more in the seventh to earn its ninth win in 12 games.

Aidan McCarthy threw 4.2 innings of two-hit scoreless relief to earn the win. Nick Irizarry added two singles and an RBI.

Akhil Penkal singled, doubled and scored a run as Old Bridge fell to 10-3. Justin Hascup tripled, drove in a run and scored.

South Plainfield 6, Old Bridge 3

Down 3-0, visiting South Plainfield rallied for the big GMC Red Division win with four runs in the fifth inning and added two more in the seventh.

The Tigers (9-3 overall, 7-2 in division) moved into a tie for first with Old Bridge (10-3, 7-2). They play the second game of the series Friday at South Plainfield.

Zack Robinson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the win and Nick Irizarry had two hits and an RBI. Dom Massaro (double, 2 runs, 2 waks), Jayden Alvarez (RBI, run), Steve Studlack (run) and Brandon Bickunas (double) each had a hit for the Tigers. Additionally, Dan Kapsch walked twice, had an RBI and scored.

Aiden McCarthy earned the win by throwing 4 2/3 shutout innings and allowed two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

For Old Bridge, Akhil Penkala was 2-for-3 (run) and Justin Hascup (triple), JT Meyer and MJ Altman each had a hit and an RBI.
