South Brunswick Rally Falls Short in 8-6 Loss to South Plainfield

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ -- South Brunswick started out with an early lead.
Later on, it looked like the Vikings might get blown out.

Then, in Act 3, South Plainfield had to hold on for dear life, holding off a South Brunswick rally for a rain-soaked 8-6 baseball victory over the Vikings on Thursday afternoon.

South Plainfield, after trailing, 2-0, had leads of 6-2 and 8-4, but the game ended with three South Brunswick runners on base when Zack Robinson struck out the final batter to save the game for left-handed starter Aldo Pigna.

The Vikings (3-2) had taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single to center by Colin Perna after two walks and two wild pitches put two runners in scoring position. But Pigna then retired 10 of the next 11 batters he faced, and South Plainfield tied the game with single runs in the first and second innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers broke through with four runs, aided by two South Brunswick errors. With the bases loaded and one out, ninth-place hitter Steve Studlack hit a groundball to first base. South Brunswick's first baseman stepped on the bag for the second out, but his throw home (which was no longer a force play) skipped past the catcher, allowing two runners to score for a 4-2 South Plainfield lead.

Then, South Plainfield center fielder Dom Massaro lined an RBI single to left for a 5-2 lead. Massaro, a sophomore who batted .402 as a sophomore, went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four stolen bases in the game. The only time Massaro was retired on Thursday, it was on a 300-foot screamer down the left field line that was run down by Vikings' left fielder Colin Perna.

The Tigers' fourth run of the fourth inning came in on an error.

South Brunswick got two runs back in the top of the fifth as the weather, which was fine at the start of the game, started to deteriorate. After two walks and a groundout, Dan Kirk's groundout scored one run, and another came in on a two-out wild pitch to cut South Plainfield's lead to 6-4.

South Plainfield (3-1) added single runs in the fifth and the sixth inning. The only inning in which the Tigers were held scoreless was the third. They had an 8-4 lead as South Brunswick came to bat in te bottom of the seventh. But, after Pigna made a spectacular play fielding Nick Stenger's leadoff high chopper and whirled to nab Stenger at first base, the South Plainfield lefty ran into trouble, hitting the next batter and then, with two out, yielding an RBI single off the left field fence by Will Haman.

Haman, who also made a brilliant play at third base earlier in the game, was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for South Brunswick. After Dan Kirk walked, Robinson came in from shortstop to replace Pigna on the mound. After a passed ball, a walk loaded the bases, then Jake Graci drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the Vikings' sixth run and put the potential go-ahead run on first. But Robinson found his control in time to get the last batter on a 2-2 called strike to send everyone to seek shelter and warmth.

The decision completed a two-game sweep by South Plainfield of South Brunswick, after the Vikings had opened their season with three straight wins under first-year coach Mike Pallitto. South Plainfield beat the Vikings, 4-3, in South Brunswick on Tuesday.

Grand Poobah III Those weren’t earthquake aftershocks or thunder from the skies above on Thurs-just the passing of the order ritual & chants of Poobah Poobah as we helmeted our newest Poobah -Jr Nick Irizarry after his performance (2-3 2b 2 sb 2r) helped lead his mates to a W.

Dom Massaro (2-3 3 r 3 sb) , Brandon Bickunas (2-4 r) and Nick Irizarry (2-3 2 r 2sb) brought the metal and provided starter Aldo Pigna with the run support he needed to pick up his 2nd DUB and improve the Tigers to 3-1 in the early part of the 2024 season.
