Robinson lifts South Plainfield by Old Bridge

Senior Zack Robinson was 2-for-2 with a walk, two triples and three runs batted in to lead South Plainfield to a home-and-home sweep of Old Bridge.

Dan Kapsch singled twice and scored a pair of runs in the win. Kevin Penny allowed a run in the top of the first and two hits in all as South Plainfield raised its record to 10-3.

John Smith scored the run and had both hits — a single and a double — for Old Bridge, which dipped to 10-4 on the season.

Junior lefty Kevin Penny went the distance, allowing a run on two hits and he struck out five and walked four as South Plainfield completed the key GMC Red Division sweep.

Penny pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the top of first with no outs, allowing just a run on a sac fly by Aquil Penkala, which brought home lead-off hitter John Smith (2-for-4, SBs).

The Tigers (10-3 overall, 8-3 in division) responded in the bottom half of the inning by scoring three runs on three hits. Dom Massaro (1-for-3) and Dan Kapsch (2-for-3) both singled and were driven home by a two-run triple off the bat of Zach Robinson, who also scored on a ground out.

Robinson (2-for-2, two triples and three RBIs) struck again in the 5th with another triple driving in Kapsch. Jay Alvarez (1-for-3, RBI) doubled to bring Robinson home for the fifth run.

South Plainfield has its final Red Division series next week against St. Joseph.

Old Bridge plays Monroe next week.
