South Plainfield Sweeps Edison, 9-4
By Guy Kipp
EDISON, NJ -- On a day when Edison's pitching kept some of the biggest bats in the South Plainfield lineup relatively quiet, the bottom third of the Tigers offense created traffic on the bases all day long.
The bottom three batters in South Plainfield's order reached base eight times in 12 plate appearances, and sophomore third baseman Chris Loniewski continued a hot start to his varsity career with two hits and two runs batted in as the Tigers beat Edison, 9-4, on Thursday to sweep the two-game series from the Eagles.
South Plainfield was a 14-4 winner in Tuesday's meeting with Edison.
Edison scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. Anthony Calantoni, who was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, doubled and scored on Robert Roma's sacrifice fly in the first inning. Teddy Eyler doubled in a run in the second inning.
South Plainfield, after going quietly in the first two innings, had the last two batters in its order stir up trouble in the third, as Lorenzo Fuscoletti drew a leadoff walk and Steve Studlack lined a single to center. After a passed ball, Dom Massaro's sac fly plated South Plainfield's first run. In the fourth inning, the Tigers tied the game after Loniewski hit a slider into right-center for a one-out single, Ryan Balent singled with two out, and then Fuscoletti and Studlack both drew walks, the latter one forcing in the tying run.
"It seemed like every inning, we had guys on, and we were just one or two hits away," South Plainfield coach Scott Gleichenhaus said. "Luckily, with that patience, it led to a lot of walks, and those walks led to runs, and that's the difference in the game. Bottom of the order, our plan is for there not to be an easy out in this lineup - working counts, batter after batter after batter, seeing as many pitches as possible, staying in the at-bats as long as you can. That allows other batters to watch and see what the pitchers are doing so that when they get up, they have a plan what they're gonna do when their number is called. It seemed like every inning it was that one key at-bat, that one gapper or something, was there for the taking and we just couldn't connect on it."
In the fifth, South Plainfield took the lead for good with three runs. Nick Irizarry reached on an error leading off. He then stole one of the four bases that he pilfered in the game. Aiden McCarthy's fly ball went for a single to center and Loniewski drilled a line single to left to give South Plainfield a 3-2 lead.
"I'm just looking to find my fastball and hit it up the middle. With runners on I'm just trying to put it in play," said Loniewski, who was 2-for-3 with a walk in Tuesday's game, giving him four hits and three walks in his first two varsity starts. "I'm comfortable hitting anywhere. Every spot's going to have someone in a spot to produce. In the fifth inning at-bat, it was a fastball right down the middle. I was looking for one. I love it here (on varsity). Great teammates, great coaches. I just want to play some ball."
A bases-loaded walk to Fuscoletti -- who walked in each of his four times at bat -- and a passed ball extended South Plainfield's lead to 5-0.
Winning pitcher Mike Castagna, who allowed five hits and three runs in four innings, and Jayden Jimenez, who closed out the game with three innings of relief, both benefited from some sparkling fielding by their Tiger teammates. When Calantoni singled with two out and a runner on second in the second inning, South Plainfield got out of the inning by executing a 6-3-5-2-5-7 rundown between third base and home plate to get out of the inning. Studlack, the catcher, pegged a runner trying to steal in the third. Shortstop Dan Kapsch made a scintillating play on a grounder to his right, coming in, to throw out the first batter of the sixth inning. Then the next batter's ground ball to the right side saw second baseman Fuscoletti and first baseman Kevin Penny make excellent plays on both the fielding end of the batted ball and then the scoop of the throw to first.
"Luckily we played some good defense," Gleichenhaus said. "'Stag' bulldogged his way through. He wasn't always hitting his spots. I thought he threw well and just wasn't getting some calls. And that's baseball. Our motto is 'One Pitch, One At-Bat At a Time,' and that's what got us to put together nine runs. Mike, he's awesome. He's a great kid, kind of kid you just root for and you want on the mound. Nothing fazes him. He didn't want to come out of the game after giving up that leadoff double in the fifth. He was like, 'Come on, I don't want to come out of the game.' But it was the third time through the order. He's deceptive because he can mix up his speeds very well and pop it when he wants to. And then bringing in Jimenez at the end there, just to get outs, it was nice to see. This is his second varsity outing. He had one outing last year. He came in, did everything he had to do: Get these guys to put the ball in play and our fielders made the plays behind him."
Edison's defense wasn't as good. The Eagles committed three errors, two in South Plainfield's three-run seventh inning.
South Plainfield will host St. Joseph of Metuchen on Friday, then play the Falcons on the road on Monday.
