South Plainfield Holds Off Millburn, 5-3, in Autism Awareness Challenge Game

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The top of South Plainfield's order spent the morning getting on base and starter Mike Castagna pitched into the seventh inning as Tigers held off a Millburn rally for a 5-3 victory over the Millers in the Autism Awareness Challenge at Union Catholic on Sunday.

The game was originally scheduled for Community Park in North Brunswick on Saturday, but bad weather and wet grounds forced the game onto Union Catholic's turf field, which just happens to be a lot closer to home for both of these teams.

The top two hitters in South Plainfield's order reached base seven of eight times on Sunday, with junior leadoff man Dom Massaro going 3-for-3 with a walk, a triple and two stolen bases. Dan Kapsch, batting second, was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a hit-by-pitch.

Castagna, a junior right-hander, took a shutout into the seventh inning. Getting his curve over for strikes and receiving first-rate fielding support from his teammates, Castagna went 6 1/3 innings, allowed four hits and two runs, struck out three and walked three. Jayden Jimenez got the final out for the save with two Millburn runners on base.

South Plainfield (4-2) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Dave Butrico's line drive to left went for an inside-the-park, two-run homer after Millburn's left fielder made a diving attempt and the ball got past him and rolled away on the fast synthetic surface.

Massaro tripled to left-center with one out in the third inning and scored when Kapsch's pop fly to shallow right field fell in between three Millburn fielders. Millburn catcher Sawyer Stein caught Kapsch attempting to steal to quell further damage that inning.

South Plainfield's 3-0 lead after three innings was also a product of its defense. Kapsch, at shortstop, and first baseman Aidan McCarthy combined on a slick play at both ends in the first inning, catcher Steve Studlack caught a Millburn runner trying to steal to end the top of the third and Castagna picked a runner off first base in the top of the fourth. McCarthy would later make another sparkling play at first base fielding a sharp grounder on the short hop in the sixth.

Kevin Penny's RBI single through the middle in the fourth inning gave South Plainfield a 4-0 lead after Nick Irizarry had singled and crossed to third on an errant pickoff attempt. The Tigers extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth. Massaro beat out a grounder down the third-base line for a leadoff single, Kapsch doubled to left-center and, after McCarthy was hit by a pitch, Irizarry plated Massaro with a sacrifice fly to center.

Millburn (3-3), which had at least one baserunner in every inning after the first, trailed, 5-0, after six innings. Brett Ploetner, who was 2-for-3 with a stolen base in the game, lined a single to left leading off the seventh. Castagna struck out the next batter with his best fastball of the day, but Jonah Toubes reached when his shallow fly to right fell in for a single. Reliever Joe Stanzione got the next batter on a foul popup to McCarthy at first, but Enzo Gurijala broke up the shutout with an RBI single to right field.

After a walk to Peter Lawrence, the Millers cut the deficit to 5-3 on Keigo Fujita's two-run single to right field, but Jimenez came on to retire the next batter on a grounder to shortstop for a game-ending force at second.

In addition to the production from Massaro and Kapsch at the top of the order, Penny went 2-for-3 for South Plainfield, which collected nine hits after getting shut out, 1-0, by Old Bridge in its last game on Thursday.

Millburn was coming off a 6-1 victory over a strong Livingston team on Thursday, breaking a 1-1 tie with five runs in the seventh inning. So, in their last two games, the Millers have scored eight runs in the seventh inning, but one run in the other 13 innings combined.
