South Plainfield 4, Old Bridge 3: South Plainfield manufactured two runs in the top of the seventh and then stopped Old Bridge’s rally to pull out the drama-filled Red Division win.
Old Bridge (2-3) entered the season as the Home News Tribune’s No. 1 team in the GMC and South Plainfield (3-1) was No. 2.
Tuesday, Old Bridge scored three times in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead. In the seventh, Dom Massaro led off with a hit and Nick Irizarry hit a slow roller to third that he beat out and the speedy Massaro took third on the play. Dan Kapsch walked with the bases loaded.
Old Bridge picked the aggressive Massaro off third but he scored on the rundown after the throw to the plate got away from the catcher to tie it 3-3. After Aiden McCarthy was intentionally walked and a close groundout, Kevin Penny walked to score Kapsch and make it 4-3.
Not over yet.
Jayden Jimenez came in to close the game for the Tigers and faced the top of the order. He had two outs and one on when he struck out the cleanup hitter Erich Schikschenet, who reached after the ball got away from the catcher. A double steal made it second and third but Jimenez got a pop up to shortstop to end the game.
Penny earned the win allowing three runs (2 ER) in six innings with four strikeouts. Massaro was 3-for-3 with a walk and scored three runs.
Old Bridge’s ace Justin Hascup allowed two runs (1 ER) in five innings with eight strikeouts. He also doubled and drove in a run. Brody Nugent went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Knights.
