Baseball Game Preview: South Plainfield Tigers vs. St. Joseph Falcons

Baseball Preview: South Plainfield Tigers vs. St. Joseph Falcons

South Plainfield and St. Joseph are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2015, but likely not for long. The Tigers will face off against the Falcons at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. South Plainfield will be strutting in after a victory while St. Joseph will be coming in after a loss.

South Plainfield gave up the first runs on Thursday, but they didn't let that get them down. They walked away with a 9-4 win over Edison. The Tigers haven't had any issues with the Eagles recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.

Chris Loniewski and Lorenzo Fuscoletti did most of the damage at the plate: Loniewski scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances, while Fuscoletti scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Nick Irizarry, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-4.

Meanwhile, St. Joseph came up short against Woodbridge on Thursday and fell 9-4.

Domenic Erbafina was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off four hits.

On the hitting side, Luke Palermo made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-2 with one home run and three RBI. JP Zayle was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

South Plainfield's win bumped their record up to 2-0. As for St. Joseph, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-2.

South Plainfield came out on top in a nail-biter against St. Joseph when the teams last played back in May of 2024, sneaking past 11-9. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Tigers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
