Senior righty Ryan Hutchison pitched a complete-game, three-hitter Saturday to lead South Plainfield past Montgomery 3-2 in South Plainfield.
The Tigers (4-1) have won three straight.
Hutchison, 1-0, was the key as the Tigers won despite making four errors. Hutchison had two strikeouts and a walk in his 85-pitch effort.
Montgomery (1-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first when junior first baseman Matt Charlton reached on an infield error and moved to second on Brett Ender's groundout. Hutchison got senior Nick Covello on a fly to left. But Charlton scored when senior D.J. Ruhlman's grounder went through the third baseman's legs.
South Plainfield responded quickly in the bottom of the inning. Junior left fielder Mark Tomei got it going when he tripled off a 1-2 pitch from senior righty Ryan Carmon. Carmon struck out Hutchison, but senior center fielder Brandon Downes doubled down the third-base line to tie it. Carmon set the next two batters out to escape further damage.
South Plainfield took the lead in the bottom of the second. Sophomore designated hitter Quinn Cochrane led off with a double over the center fielder's head, moved to third on a wild pitch. Carmon struck out junior third baseman Nick Demarco, but the ball got away from senior catcher Patrick Guma. Guma threw to Charlton for the out. Charlton then threw home in an attempt to cut down Cochrane, but he slid home safely to give the Tigers the lead.
South Plainfield extended the lead to 3-1 in the fifth on Tomei's one-out double, Hutchison's single to center and Downes' sacrifice fly to center.
Montgomery cut the lead to 3-2 in the seventh. With two outs, Gerry Patrizio reached on an infield error. With first baseman Dan Hansen playing back, Patrizio went to second on defensive indifference. He scored when Charlton's grounder was botched. Hutchison then got Ender on a forceout to end the game.
