Unbeaten Perth Amboy descended upon South Plainfield's Frank Jost Field yesterday determined to make a statement against an A-list opponent.
It made a rather emphatic one, rallying from five runs down before pushing across two runs in the top of the seventh to complete a 10-8 victory over South Plainfield in South Plainfield.
"We wanted to come here and win this game and put it out there. The word has been that this team cannot do what it has been doing," Rosa said. "They're a tough team, a great team, South Plainfield, with great players and it is motivation for us."
Rosa capped a four-run uprising in the sixth with a towering, two-run double that knotted the score at 8-8. Perth Amboy (7-0) added the winning runs in the seventh when Carlos Done walked and scored on a infield throwing error and pinch-hitter Tilson Brito singled home an insurance run.
"It's just believing in themselves," Perth Amboy coach Ernie Kregeloh said. "They've been through this before. They've been on the wrong side of games like this. They know how it feels and it's just believing in themselves and believing in their ability. It's a good ball team and today they showed that by coming back."
South Plainfield (4-3) enjoyed a 7-2 advantage after two innings when Brandon Downes singled in runs in the each of the first two frames and Stephen Petriello clubbed an inside fastball over the left-field fence for a grand slam to key a six-run second.
In recent years that might have been a signal for the Perth Amboy driver to start warming up the bus in anticipation of an early, mercy-rule ending, but this team showed it was not done yet by answering with two runs in the top of third to close to 7-4. South Plainfield starter Charlie Huber, buoyed by the five-run cushion, threw his first 14 pitches for strikes in the third, but Perth Amboy still managed to score twice when Ishmael Paulino (3-for-4 with a double and two RBI) singled home a run and Jose Hernadez scored on a balk.
Huber retired Perth Amboy in order in the fourth and fifth, requiring a mere 17 pitches to do so, before an infield error leading off the sixth opened the floodgates. Luis Marte and Alfredo Tavares, batting eighth and ninth, respectively, each singled in a run before Rosa tied the score with his two-base hit.
Perth Amboy ace Emilio Calderon (4-0) finished the contest with two innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory.
South Plainfield will not have to wait long for revenge, as the teams meet again today in Perth Amboy.
"We're always the underdogs, since my freshman year it's been like that," Rosa, a senior, said.
Perth Amboy won't have to worry about being underdogs much longer.
