For a second straight day, Perth Amboy and South Plainfield played a wild one, and Perth Amboy came away with a 10-9 victory in 10 innings to remain undefeated.
Jose Hernandez delivered the game-winning hit, driving a single to left field to score Francis Vargas from second base. Vargas, a junior varsity player, was pinch-running for Emilio Calderon.
"I thought last night's (Thursday's) game was crazy," said Perth Amboy (8-0) coach Ernest Kregeloh, whose team also won on Thursday. "Yesterday's (Thursday's) game was boring compared to this one. It was back and forth. I thought this team showed character and South Plainfield's team (also showed character). It was such a battle."
"They (Perth Amboy) execute, they can play, they can hit," said South Plainfield (4-4) coach Anthony Guida, following the loss for his ball club. "They (Perth Amboy) put the ball in play and not much you can do with three singles in the 10th inning."
With South Plainfield leading 5-3 in the sixth inning and in control of the game, Perth Amboy found the answer it was seeking as Anderson Rosa belted a three-run home run off Daniel Hansen to give Perth Amboy a 6-5 lead.
South Plainfield answered back in the seventh, as Mark Tomei led off with a single to left and Perth Amboy then made two costly errors in the field, allowing Ryan Hutchinson and Brandon Downes to reach and load the bases with no outs.
Cleanup hitter Stephen Petriello, who earlier hit a 2-run homer, drove in two runs with a single, and Hansen followed that with a two-run double to left field, giving South Plainfield a 9-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
Brandon Downes also earlier hit a two-run home run for South Plainfield.
Perth Amboy answered again, as Ismael Paulino hit a two-run triple to bring the Panthers within one run. After Luis Marte grounded out to second, ninth-place hitter Alfredo Tavares perfectly executed a suicide-squeeze with the infield drawn in to score Paulino and tie the game, as Tavares reached first safely.
"We work on that in practice at least once a week and he executed it perfect," said Kregeloh.
Both teams struggled to do anything offensively in extra innings until Perth Amboy got up to bat in the bottom of the 10th and the rest was history.
Hansen did not have his greatest outing for South Plainfield, scattering 14 hits and allowing 9 runs in seven innings, and received a no decision.
Wonder Ortega got the win for Perth Amboy, pitching three terrific innings of relief while Tommy Bowden took the loss for South Plainfield, as Perth Amboy remains undefeated.
"What's been good about this team is different people are stepping up at different times and that's what you need to do to succeed," said Kregeloh.
