Robert Nunez improved his personal record
to 5-0 while snapping South Plainfield’s winning streak at five games.
Nunez allowed just two hits over six innings. He fanned five and walked
three while outdueling Chris Shine.
Woodbridge took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After Carlos Marte doubled
and the dangerous Mike Medvetz, who entered the contest batting .500 with a
team-leading 21 hits, walked, Darren Gonzalez delivered a single to left, which
was mishandled, allowing Marte and Medvetz to score.
South Plainfield cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth on Rob
Gonzalez’s sacrifice fly.
Medvetz belted his team-leading fourth homer of the season in the bottom of
the inning to provide an insurance run for reliever Joe Muccilli, who hurled a
scoreless seventh for the save.
Woodbridge (11-5 overall, 5-4 division) is now tied for second place in the
division in the loss column with North Brunswick and Sayreville.
South Plainfield fell to 9-8 overall and 6-5 in the division.
