Chris Shine hurled a complete-game shutout, striking out 10 and allowing just one hit while throwing 102 pitches as the 14th-seeded Tigers advanced to Wednesday’s quarterfinals against sixth-seeded Colonia. That game will be played 4 p.m. at North Brunswick's Community Park.

Colonia swept the regular-season series with South Plainfield, wining 1-0 and 8-4.

South Plainfield scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings off South Brunswick ace Jacob Ciccone, who went the distance, allowing two earned runs on nine hits and one walk. Ciccone also struck out four while throwing 108 pitches.

Connor Adams and Mike Marrero (two runs) each went 2-for-4 for South Plainfield, while teammates Rob Gonzalez and Billy Keane each had an RBI. Sammy Nieves went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Nic DeLaCruz had South Brunswick’s lone hit. Teammate Felix Quinones drew a walk. The Vikings did not have another baserunner.

South Plainfield (16-9) has won seven in a row.

Chris Shine threw a complete game one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and one walk to push 14th-seeded South Plainfield to a 3-0 win over third-seeded South Brunswick in the first round of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament at Rowland Park in Cranbury.

Shine's sole conceded hit of the game came in the first inning, on a single by Nick Delacruz.
Michael Marrero got the Tigers offense going early, by hitting a single in the second at-bat of the game. Later in the inning, Billy Keane belted out a double to center field to drive Marrero in for the first run of the game.

Rob Gonzalez kept the scoring going in the next inning, by hitting an RBI single. Sammy Nieves brought Gonzalez in for a run when he hit a single in the fifth inning.

The victory gives South Plainfield it's seventh straight victory.

Jacob Ciccone threw a complete game for South Brunswick, striking out four and conceding two earned runs.

South Plainfield will face sixth-seeded Colonia in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday.
