Jordan Hamberg threw a perfect game to lead South Plainfield to an 8-0 win over Woodbridge, in Woodbridge.

The junior left-hander used 81 pitches and 13 strikeouts to reach the feat, and Woodbridge's hitters were only able to get the ball out of the infield twice.

"He was just pounding the strike-zone," said South Plainfield coach Anthony Guida. "His off-speed was good, and he was hitting the corners. It was a sight to see."

"He put confidence in his fielders," the coach added. "The kids had a celebration right after it happened, so it was nice to see the jubilation they had, and to take part in it."

Hamberg's standout performance came in the Tigers' (12-6) last division game of the season. The pitcher picked up his fourth win of the year, and he has racked up 27 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched, with a 2.51 ERA.

"Jordan has real nice delivery over the top," said Guida. "He's not overpowering, but he has enough velocity and he has good movement in his two-seamer. He's thrown in most of our big games, and he's done what most coaches ask for in their pitchers, which is pounding the strike-zone. He's an absolute gem."

Dominance on the mound has been a theme for South Plainfield's pitchers this year, as Justin Jones threw a two-hitter against Woodbridge just a day before Hamberg's performance. Seton Hall commit Chris Shine leads the team with 52 strikeouts with a 1.08 ERA, while allowing five earned runs in 32 innings.

"We've been blessed with pitching," Guida said. "In any season, if you have good pitching, you can make a run."

The perfect game was actually the second one Guida has seen in his years coaching South Plainfield, as former Tiger left-hander Dylan Pappa also performed the feat in the first round of the 2009 Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament against Dunellen.

Chris Shine recorded two doubles and two RBI to lead South Plainfield on offense. Hamberg also tallied a double and an RBI.

Robert Nunez struck out three and walked three for Woodbridge (7-11).
