The ninth-seeded Tigers squandered a four-run first-inning lead as the top-seeded Highlanders rallied for a comeback victory in the Central Group II quarterfinals.

The Tigers had an opportunity to extend their lead in the top of the fifth, but the Highlanders turned an inning-ending double play to escape a bases-loaded jam.

Drew Compton’s state-leading 13th homer of the season enabled Governor Livingston to forge a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the fifth. Sean McCulloch followed with a two-run single for a 6-4 lead. The Highlanders tacked on one more run in the fifth-inning rally to take a 7-4 advantage.

After South Plainfield closed the deficit to 7-5 in the sixth, Governor Livingston answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to produce the final margin

South Plainfield ends its season with an 18-9 record.
