BACKGROUND
We are live from the 2019 Greater Middlesex Conference Baseball Tournament seeding meeting at East Brunswick Tech.
All members of the tournament seeding committee are in attendance. The committee includes athletics directors from East Brunswick (Chris Yannazzo), Woodbridge (Joe Ward), Middlesex (Mike O’Donnell), Dunellen (Dave DeNapoli) and Calvary Christian (Mike Wilkerson) and head coaches from South River (Mike Lepore) and Edison (Vinnie Abene).
Former East Brunswick Athletics Director Frank Noppenberger, who is now the GMC's Executive Director, is running the tournament, along with GMC Baseball Committee co-chairman Mike Pede, who is the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools athletics director.

SEEDING CRITERIA

With the tournament having shifted from an open format involving every GMC school to a field of 16 for the championship tournament with all unseeded teams being placed in the invitational tournament, division winners are no longer guaranteed a seed.
According to conference rules, the only criteria to which the seeding committee must adhere is that no school may be seeded ahead of another it finished behind in the division.
The division standings after the conclusion of May 4 action follow.
RED DIVISION
Old Bridge (14-5) 10-2
South Brunswick (12-3) 10-2

New Brunswick (5-11) 1-9
GOLD DIVISION
South Amboy (8-5) 7-1

The seeding committee will place a premium on “wins on the board,” meaning it will heavily weigh head-to-head results of teams that are being simultaneously scrutinized for a seed or wins over opponents that have already been seeded.
When wins on the board are not present, the committee will consider common conference opponents, conference strength of schedule, overall records and division records.

HOW SEEDING WORKS

Seeding will commence with all division champions being placed on the board (if a division has co-champions, the co-champions will be simultaneously considered).
Therefore, the following schools will be considered for a top seed:
  • Old Bridge (co-Red Division champion)
  • South Brunswick (co-Red Division champion)
  • St. Joseph (White Division champion)
  • Middlesex (Blue Division champion)
  • South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
  • Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
Once one of the aforementioned teams has been seeded, the team that finished beneath it in the division will take its place on the board for consideration, a process that will continue until the field of 16 has been seeded.

POINTS OF INTEREST

Gold Division champion South Amboy played three schools outside its division, losing by a combined score of 36-10 to J.P. Stevens, Woodbridge and Spotswood. Those losses may hinder the Governors chances of being seeded in the championship tournament.
Silver Division champion Perth Amboy Tech played just one opponent outside its division, that being Passaic Tech, to which it lost 22-4.
The Red Division posted a 9-5 record against White Division foes, suggesting the Red Division is superior, which the seeding committee may take into consideration at certain junctures throughout the seeding process.
The Blue Division went 1-3 against Red Division schools and 1-1 against White Division schools, suggesting a Blue Division school may not get a nod above a Red Division or White Division school in certain instances.

TROUBLE SPOTS

The committee will eventually have to break ties between Monroe and J.P. Stevens, which finished tied for second in the Red Division, Perth Amboy and Piscataway, which finished tied for third in the Red Division, and Woodbridge and North Brunswick, which finished tied for fifth in the White Division. All of those teams split their regular-season series.
Colonia and Sayreville finished tied for fourth in the White Division with identical 5-7 division records. However, Colonia swept Sayreville in the regular season, winning 7-2 and 4-0. The committee must determine if Colonia’s sweep of Sayreville outweighs the fact that Sayreville (8-10) finished with a better overall record than Colonia (6-12) and that the Bombers have quality wins over Old Bridge, St. Joseph and Edison, while the Patriots' lone quality win is over South Plainfield. This decision greatly impacts seeding. MyCentralJersey.com speculates the committee will seed Colonia ahead of Sayreville and predicates its projected seeds on that assumption.

IMPORTANT NOTE

The projected seeds below were made before Sunday’s game between South Brunswick and North Brunswick was contested. North Brunswick would obviously help its cause with a win, while a South Brunswick loss may not be detrimental to the Vikings’ seed.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR TOP SEED

Old Bridge (co-Red Division champion)
South Brunswick (co-Red Division champion)
St. Joseph (White Division champion)
Middlesex (Blue Division champion)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
The top seed will be awarded to Old Bridge (14-5 overall, 10-2 Red Division): Old Bridge will be the only team with two wins on the board. The Knights defeated St. Joseph 3-1 and split their regular-season series with South Brunswick, winning 4-0 and losing 4-3. The Knights went 3-1 against White Division schools, beating St. Joseph 3-1, North Brunswick 3-2, Edison 7-1 and losing to Sayreville 3-1. The Knights’ other division loss was an 8-4 setback to Perth Amboy. The Knights share a common nonconference opponent with St. Joseph. Both teams lost to Seton Hall Prep with Old Bridge falling 7-1 in nine innings and St. Joseph losing 3-0. The Knights share a common division crossover opponent with South Brunswick. The Knights, as previously mentioned, fell 3-1 to Sayreville, which South Brunswick defeated 6-1. The committee will not take into consideration that Old Bridge lost 8-7 in nine innings to St. Augustine, which the Star Ledger ranked among the Top 10 teams in the state at the time.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR SECOND SEED

South Brunswick (co-Red Division champion)
St. Joseph (White Division champion)
Middlesex (Blue Division champion)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
The second seed will be awarded to Middlesex (15-3 overall, 9-1 Blue Division):The Blue Jays will be the only team with a win on the board. They defeated South Brunswick 9-5. Middlesex’s only losses are to Spotswood 2-1, Rutherford 11-4 and West Morris 3-2. The committee will not take into account that Middlesex has nonconference wins over Delaware Valley 4-3, Union 6-0, Watchung Hills 8-3 and Rutgers Prep 4-1. Middlesex was leading defending league tournament champion South Plainfield 10-0 in a game that was called in the bottom of the fifth inning due to inclement weather. Just as the seeding committee will not take that unofficial contest into account, neither will it consider that St. Joseph was leading Rutherford, a common opponent it shares with Middlesex, 6-1 when that game was called before it became official. Just as Middlesex lost by a run to West Morris, so did St. Joseph, falling 2-1 to the same team.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR THIRD SEED

South Brunswick (co-Red Division champion)
St. Joseph (White Division champion)
Metuchen (second place Blue Division)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
The third seed will be awarded to South Brunswick (12-3 overall, 10-2 Red Division): The Vikings are the lone team with a win on the board. They split their regular-season series with Old Bridge, winning 4-3 and losing 4-0. South Brunswick went 2-1 outside the Red Division, defeating Sayreville 6-1, South Plainfield 8-6 and losing to Middlesex 9-5. South Brunswick’s only other loss was a 3-2 setback to Piscataway. The Vikings have won six straight and 11 of their last 12.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR FOURTH SEED

J.P. Stevens (tied for second with Monroe in Red Division)
Monroe (tied for second with J.P. Stevens in Red Division)
St. Joseph (White Division champion)
Metuchen (second place Blue Division)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
The fourth seed will be awarded to St. Joseph (13-6 overall, 9-3 White Division): None of the teams being considered for the fourth seed has a win on the board, but St. Joseph has the best resume and is a division champion. The Falcons have lost six games by a total of nine runs. They lost to Old Bridge 3-1, Sayreville 13-12, West Morris 2-1, Edison 5-4, North Brunswick 7-6 and Seton Hall Prep 3-0. St. Joseph squandered late leads in four of those losses. The committee will not take into account that the Falcons have nonconference wins over St. Joseph of Montvale, Marist and Arthur L. Johnson. St. Joseph won its last four division games, sweeping South Plainfield and Colonia to win the White Division championship.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR FIFTH SEED

Monroe (tied for second with J.P. Stevens in Red Division)
J.P. Stevens (tied for second with Monroe in Red Division)
South Plainfield (second place White Division)
Metuchen (second place Blue Division)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
The fifth seed will be awarded to South Plainfield (12-6 overall, 8-4 White Division): At this juncture, the committee will have to break the second-place tie between Monroe and J.P. Stevens to determine which team will represent the Red Division as a contender for the fifth seed. None of the teams being considered for the fifth seed has a win on the board and none has a resume that clearly distinguishes itself from the others. Therefore, the committee must determine if White Division runner-up South Plainfield and/or Blue Division runner-up Metuchen is superior to Red-Division runners-up Monroe and J.P. Stevens while simultaneously breaking the tie between Monroe and J.P. Stevens. Monroe and J.P. Stevens split their regular-season series with Monroe winning 9-4 and losing 4-2. Records against common opponents for both schools are an identical 7-5 with each losing twice to Old Bridge and South Brunswick and with each defeating Spotswood (Monroe beat the Chargers 12-0 and J.P. Stevens defeated the Chargers 8-0). J.P. Stevens was outscored 22-2 in its four losses to Old Bridge and South Brunswick. Monroe was outscored 19-7 in its four losses to Old Bridge and South Brunswick. Monroe lost 8-6 to North Brunswick of the White Division. J.P. Stevens lost 5-4 to Woodbridge of the White Division (North Brunswick and Woodbridge finished tied for last in the White Division). J.P. Stevens outscored the three division opponents it swept (East Brunswick, Piscataway and Perth Amboy) by a combined 40-19 margin. Monroe swept those same three opponents by a combined 32-8 margin. Because it won its seven division games by a wider margin, endured its four division losses by a closer margin, defeated Spotswood by a greater margin and outscored the Hawks 11-8 in the regular-season series split between the schools, Monroe should be seeded higher than J.P. Stevens. But should Monroe be seeded ahead of South Plainfield, which went 2-1 against Red Division foes, beating East Brunswick 5-1, Perth Amboy 12-2 and falling to South Brunswick 8-6? South Plainfield also swept its season series with Woodbridge, which beat J.P. Stevens, and swept its series with North Brunswick, which beat Monroe. The committee must exercise caution at this juncture regarding the fact that the Red Division went 9-5 against the White Division, making it in theory a superior division, because South Plainfield has wins over two common opponents to which Monroe and J.P. Stevens lost, as well as a 2-1 record against Red Division foes. Working against Metuchen, which has an 8-7 win over North Brunswick as its lone quality division crossover victory, is the fact that the Blue Division went a combined 2-5 against the Red Division and White Division.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR SIXTH SEED

Monroe (tied for second with J.P. Stevens in Red Division)
J.P. Stevens (tied for second with Monroe in Red Division)
Edison (third place White Division)
Metuchen (second place Blue Division)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
The sixth seed will be awarded to Edison (13-8 overall, 7-5): Assuming at this juncture that the committee broke the tie with Monroe and J.P. Stevens, giving the Falcons the nod over the Hawks, Edison will earn the sixth seed. Edison is the only team from the group with wins on the board, having defeated South Plainfield 3-2 and St. Joseph 5-4. J.P. Stevens defeated Edison 6-5, but if the seeding committee determines Monroe should be considered from the Red Division before the Hawks, J.P. Stevens won’t have a chance to earn the sixth seed.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR SEVENTH SEED

Monroe (tied for second with J.P. Stevens in Red Division)
J.P. Stevens (tied for second with Monroe in Red Division)
Sayreville (tied for third place with Colonia in White Division)
Colonia (tied for third place with Sayreville in White Division)
Metuchen (second place Blue Division)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
IMPORTANT NOTE: Should the seeding committee committee forgive Sayreville's two losses to Colonia and determine the Bombers should be seeded ahead of the Patriots after both teams finished with identical 5-7 White Division records, then Sayreville could make an argument for being seeded as high as seventh by virtue of its wins over Old Bridge, St. Joseph and Edison. As previously mentioned, MyCentralJersey.com is speculating that the committee will break the division tie between Colonia and Sayreville by rewarding the Patriots for their regular-season series sweep of Sayreville, meaning Colonia would have to be seeded before Sayreville.
The seventh seed will be awarded to Monroe (9-6 overall, 7-5 division): Assuming the committee votes that Colonia should be seeded ahead of Sayreville, here is where the committee must consider Monroe’s overall and division record against Colonia (6-12 overall, 5-7 White Division) having a quality win on the board with a victory over South Plainfield.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR EIGHTH SEED

J.P. Stevens (tied for second with Monroe in Red Division)
Sayreville (tied for third place with Colonia in White Division)
Colonia (tied for third place with Sayreville in White Division)
Metuchen (second place Blue Division)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
The eighth seed will be awarded to J.P. Stevens (12-6 overall, 7-5 division): The Hawks have a win on the board over Edison and a better overall and division record than Colonia, Sayreville and Metuchen.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR NINTH SEED

Perth Amboy (tied for third with Piscataway in Red Division)
Piscataway (tied for third with Perth Amboy in the Red Division)
Sayreville (tied for third place with Colonia in White Division)
Colonia (tied for third place with Sayreville in White Division)
Metuchen (second place Blue Division)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
The ninth seed will be awarded to Metuchen (8-6 overall, 6-3 Blue Division): The Bulldogs defeated North Brunswick 8-7 in their lone division crossover. Colonia, Piscataway and Perth Amboy all have quality wins on the board but none has a better overall or division record than Metuchen. As previously mentioned, Colonia defeated South Plainfield and swept Sayreville. Piscataway beat South Brunswick and Sayreville. Perth Amboy defeated Old Bridge and Sayreville.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR 10TH SEED

Perth Amboy (tied for third with Piscataway in Red Division)
Piscataway (tied for third with Perth Amboy in the Red Division)
Sayreville (tied for third place with Colonia in White Division)
Colonia (tied for third place with Sayreville in White Division)
Spotswood (third place Blue Division)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
The 10th seed will be awarded to Colonia (6-12 overall, 5-7 White Division): Colonia’s win over South Plainfield should not necessarily trump Spotswood’s win on the board over Middlesex, but look for the committee to make a move here and award the Patriots the 10th seed, freeing up Sayreville to get on the board next. Piscataway has a quality win over South Brunswick. Perth Amboy has a quality win over Old Bridge. Neither the Chiefs nor the Panthers have a better overall or division mark than Colonia, but Spotswood does and could make an argument for being seeded 10th. However, Spotswood (7-10) has just one more overall win than Colonia, which played in a more competitive division. Spotswood has dropped its last five games. Colonia has dropped its last four.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR 11TH SEED

Perth Amboy (tied for third with Piscataway in Red Division)
Piscataway (tied for third with Perth Amboy in the Red Division)
Sayreville (tied for third place with Colonia in White Division)
Spotswood (third place Blue Division)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
The 11th seed will be awarded to Sayreville (8-12 overall, 5-7 White Division): The Bombers have quality wins over Old Bride, St. Joseph and Edison and have won more games overall than Perth Amboy, Piscataway or Spotswood.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR 12TH SEED

Perth Amboy (tied for third with Piscataway in Red Division)
Piscataway (tied for third with Perth Amboy in the Red Division)
Woodbridge (tied for sixth place with North Brunswick in the White Division)
North Brunswick (tied for sixth place with Woodbridge in the White Division)
Spotswood (third place Blue Division)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
The 12th seed will be awarded to North Brunswick (7-11 overall, 4-8 White Division): A tie between Woodbridge and North Brunswick, who split their regular-season series, must be broken. Each team has four wins on the board. Woodbridge defeated Colonia (5-4), Sayreville (2-1), Edison (8-4) and J.P. Stevens (5-4). North Brunswick defeated Colonia (1-0), Monroe (8-6), St. Joseph (7-6) and Edison (6-2). Woodbridge beat North Brunswick 6-4 and lost to North Brunswick 4-3. Woodbridge’s seven other division losses were by a total of 33 runs. North Brunswick’s seven other division losses were by a total of 25 runs. North Brunswick should be seeded ahead of Woodbridge and will be if it defeats South Brunswick on Sunday. A win over South Brunswick would give North Brunswick an impressive resume, but the Raiders can't be considered for a seed until the teams in the White Division that finished ahead of them have been seeded.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR 13TH SEED

Perth Amboy (tied for third with Piscataway in Red Division)
Piscataway (tied for third with Perth Amboy in the Red Division)
Woodbridge (tied for sixth place with North Brunswick in the White Division)
Spotswood (third place Blue Division)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
The 13th seed will be awarded to Woodbridge (7-11 overall, 4-8 White Division): Woodbridge has quality wins on the board over Colonia (5-4), Sayreville (2-1), Edison (8-4) and J.P. Stevens (5-4). The Barrons defeated South Amboy 13-0. Spotswood defeated South Amboy 4-2. That common opponent will also factor into Woodbridge being seeded ahead of the Chargers.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR 14TH SEED

Perth Amboy (tied for third with Piscataway in Red Division)
Piscataway (tied for third with Perth Amboy in the Red Division)
Spotswood (third place Blue Division)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
The 14th seed will be awarded to Spotswood (7-10 overall, 6-4 Blue Division): Spotswood has a quality win over Middlesex and a better overall and division record than Piscataway and Perth Amboy.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR 15TH SEED

Perth Amboy (tied for third with Piscataway in Red Division)
Piscataway (tied for third with Perth Amboy in the Red Division)
J.F. Kennedy (fourth place in the Blue Division)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
The 15th seed will be awarded to Piscataway (5-12 overall, 3-9 Red Division): The Chiefs have quality wins over South Brunswick and Sayreville. Just as the seeding committee had to break a tie between J.P. Stevens and Monroe, so will a tie have to be broken between Piscataway and Perth Amboy. The Chiefs should be seeded ahead of Perth Amboy. Not only did the Chiefs outscore the Panthers 16-8 in a series split, but the Chiefs’ other seven Red Division losses were by a total of 30 runs, whereas the Panthers’ other seven division defeats were by a total of 44 runs.

TEAMS ON BOARD FOR 16TH SEED

Perth Amboy (tied for third with Piscataway in Red Division)
J.F. Kennedy (fourth place in the Blue Division)
South Amboy (Gold Division champion)
Perth Amboy Tech (Silver Division champion)
The 16th seed will be awarded to Perth Amboy (5-11 overall, 3-9 Red Division): The Panthers have quality wins over Old Bridge and Sayreville. J.F. Kennedy has quality wins over Metuchen and Spotswood (series split). Neither of those wins, however, may be strong enough to catapult the Mustangs ahead of Perth Amboy into the championship tournament.

SEEDING COMMITTEE
