With two outs and runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh inning, North Brunswick sophomore Frankie Garbolino was looking to make something happen to avoid extra innings in Monday’s game against South Plainfield.
Garbolino, a three-sport athlete and right-handed hitter, pulled a sharp grounder down the line. The ball skipped once before ricocheting directly off the top of the third-base bag, over the third baseman’s outstretched glove and into left field, bringing home the game-winning run to give North Brunswick the walk-off win, 2-1, at home over South Plainfield.
“It felt good,” said North Brunswick head coach Mark Blevins after the victory. “It felt well-deserved because we’ve been playing some really good baseball. We did a good job working counts, we were taking pitches later in the game. Both teams played great baseball. When you have two good pitchers on the mound, it’s gonna come down to how teams execute.”
The teams played another closely contested game on Saturday, which ended in a 2-2 tie, though had it not been for an inconveniently-timed rainfall, it could have easily been another North Brunswick win.
The teams were tied after six innings before North Brunswick took a one-run lead in the top of the seventh. After a heavy downpour of rain erupted between innings, the game was called as a tie with six innings played.
Anthony Partazana nearly led off the bottom of the seventh of Monday’s game with an extra-base hit, ripping a line drive that was snagged by South Plainfield left fielder Nick DellaSala on a diving catch.
“He made a spectacular catch,” said Coach Blevins on the opposition’s highlight catch. “It was unbelievable. he sold out and made a really nice play.”
Sophomore and Rutgers commit Zachary Konstantinovsky struck out 10 and walked none, allowing seven hits and an earned run in a complete-game effort on the mound for North Brunswick (9-5-1), which has just one loss over its last nine games.
“It’s fun to coach these kids,” added Blevins. “Because they get it.
Patrick McCann went 2-for-2 with an RBI while Yomar Carreras drew a full-count walk before scoring the game-winning run on Garbolino’s walk-off for South Plainfield, which conceded a run in the bottom of the fourth before quickly tying it up with a run in the top of the fifth.
Vincent Esposito singled and doubled while Brandon Shine singled once and drove in a run for South Plainfield (8-2-1), which had been unbeaten in its previous seven games.
