Game 19: South Plainfield 7, Monroe 6

Some of the South Plainfield TIGERS who got their heads shaved for Breast Cancer Research on Saturday.  They didn't need that hair today to beat Monroe 7-6 in South Plainfield.

Mark Tomei "hit ball far."
While the previous sentence is apparently an inside joke at South Plainfield, it succinctly describes what transpired at Frank Jost Field yesterday.
Mark Tomei did indeed "hit ball far." Twice.
The junior left-fielder drilled a three-run homer, his second home run of the afternoon, to cap a two-out rally in the sixth inning that lifted South Plainfield to its second victory over Monroe in five days, 7-6, yesterday in South Plainfield.
"I told him, 'You're looking to get on base. We need baserunners; we don't need anything over the fence'," South Plainfield coach Anthony Guida said of Tome's last at-bat. "He did a little bit better than that."
Tomei drilled the first pitch he saw leading off in the bottom of the first the opposite way over the left-field fence to give South Plainfield (12-7) a 1-0 lead.
"That first pitch I didn't really think I could go up with it, but I guess I did," Tomei said. "I'm one of those kids that can hit the ball anywhere."
South Plainfield capitalized on three Monroe errors to tack on three unearned runs in the second, with Rob Eggert's two-out single through short scoring the final two runs.
Monroe (13-4) struck for six runs during the middle three innings to take the lead as starter Dan March quieted South Plainfield's bats. Sal Filiano led off the third with a triple to right and scored on Chris Viani's single up the middle.
Monroe added three more in the fourth to tie the score with a rally that began with a single by Jim Small, a double by Victor Sorrento and a single by Mike Scarrone, scoring Small. Filiano drove in Sorrento with a sacrifice fly to right that Alex Liszewski snared with a diving grab, and Scarrone scored the tying run on another RBI single by Viani. Sorrento then put Monroe on top, 6-4, with a two-run triple in the fifth.
South Plainfield's winning rally began after two were out in the sixth, as A.J. Celentano legged out an infield hit and took second when Ryan Marcoux walked on a full count. Tomei then drilled a 1-1 offering over the center-field fence for the 7-6 lead.
"I was trying to get on top, just get a base hit," Tomei said. "It was there, so I swung. It couldn't get any better than that."
"We preach that as long as we have outs, we have an opportunity," said Guida, whose team defeated St. Joseph in between its victories over Monroe. "Momentum's good this time of the year."
Nick DeMarco, who has assumed the role of closer for South Plainfield, held Monroe scoreless over the final two innings despite having runners in scoring position in both innings to earn the victory in relief.
DeMarco had help. After all, Mark Tomei hit ball far.
