Brandon Downes went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and two RBI, while Mark Tomei was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI to power fourth-seeded South Plainfield (16-7) in the first round of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament in South Plainfield. Charlie Huber (4-1) picked up his second victory in a row in relief as he pitched three scoreless innings after J.P. Stevens (9-16), seeded 13th, took a 3-2 lead in the third following a two-run double by Jasdeep Buttar. South Plainfield will take on Woodbridge in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday. South Plainfield and Woodbridge split a doubleheader on April 2.

SOUTH PLAINFIELD 8, J.P. STEVENS 3:

Junior left fielder Mark Tomei and senior center fielder Brandon Downes each went 3-for-4 to help the fourth-seeded Tigers into the quarterfinals.
Tomei doubled twice and drove in three runs, while Downes hit two doubles and a triple with two RBI. Senior third baseman Shane O'Connor went 2-for-3 for South Plainfield (16-7).
Charlie Huber (3-1) earned the win in relief, allowing no runs on three hits and walking none over three innings.
J.P. Stevens is 9-16. South Plainfield will meet the Woodbridge-Middlesex winner in Wednesday's quarterfinals.
