19-Colonia (9-15) vs. 6-St. Joseph (15-7), 4
7-South Brunswick (15-6) vs. 2-Old Bridge (15-8), 7
In case of inclement weather the games will be played on Thursday with the same schedule. The semifinals will be played on Saturday at East Brunswick Tech as 12 and 2:30 with the highest-seeded team remaining playing in the second game.
CATCHER IN THE WHITE: GMC coaches will convene on Monday night to select the all-division and All-GMC teams. The coaches have graciously allowed me to sit in on past meetings and the discussions I’ve observed have been a great tool in selecting The Star-Ledger All-County team.
Unfortunately, with 19 GMC teams beginning play in the state tournament Monday I doubt I will be able to attend, so forgive me if I do a little rain dance and hope for a downpour. With all of the rain we’ve had recently, the one time I’m hoping for rain, I’m sure it will be a perfect, sunny afternoon.
Too bad because the one discussion I wanted to hear was when the White Division coaches debate the top catcher from their division. Here’s a brief rundown on the top five candidates, listed alphabetically:
Nick Dini, Monroe: Dini is once again having a banner year at the plate, batting .460 with 28 RBI and six home runs. His RBI total is even more impressive when you consider that he bats lead-off.
James Lyczkowski, Woodbridge: Another lead-off hitting catcher who coach Lou Urbano calls his team’s best base-runner. He displayed those skills in Saturday’s 7-0 GMC win over Middlesex when he motored home from second on a dropped throw at first. He had game winning hits in back-to-back games and handles a pitching staff that held 11 consecutive foes to three runs or less.
Andrew Neich, Colonia: Neich has been the top performer on the GMC’s Cinderella team, batting .408 with five home runs and 30 RBI.
Stephen Petriello, South Plainfield: Batting .359 with 21 RBI, down from last year when he was first team All-County as a sophomore after hitting .465 with 47 hits, five home runs and 33 RBI. Still, his reputation precedes him and he will surely merit consideration even if his numbers don’t match up.
Anderson Rosa, Perth Amboy: Rosa is batting .507 with 29 RBI and seven home runs, which, as far I can tell, leads the county. His .554 on base percentage and absurd .928 slugging form a 1.482 OPS. He does a great job behind the plate and has thrown out 14 of 20 would-be base stealers.
