Dan Hansen cracked a two-run homer, Stephen Petriello stroked an RBI double and Shane O'Connor singled home a run as South Plainfield (18-7) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the first-round contest in the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 playoffs in South Plainfield. Brandon Downes belted a two-run homer and Mark Tomei added a solo shot to account for the other runs for South Plainfield, which extended its winning streak to nine games. Charlie Huber (5-1) scattered five hits and struck out six to earn the victory, yielding one unearned run. Jomar Casiano singled and scored that run on an infield error in the sixth for Ferris (6-20). South Plainfield will host Belleville, a 5-1 winner over Warren Hills, in the sectional quarterfinal round on Friday.

SOUTH PLAINFIELD 7, FERRIS 1:
Junior catcher Steven Petriello went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Tigers (18-7) while Quinn Cochrane went 2-for-3 with two doubles.
Brandon Downes hit a two-run homer and pitcher Charlie Huber improved to 5-1, giving up five hits and striking out six over six innings. The Tigers will face Belleville in the next round.
