Sapini tossed a complete game for the Tigers, allowing one earned run on three hits in South Plainfield’s 3-1 victory over Millburn. Saturday’s victory was the first one of Sapini’s career.
The sophomore got plenty of help from the defense behind him, who made several big plays throughout the day. This included a sweet diving catch by second baseman Bryan Gillen in the top of the seventh inning.
Offensively, the Tigers gave Sapini a nice cushion right away, scoring all three runs in the bottom of the first inning. After LJ Scarpitto reached first base on an error, and Tommy Dunn grounded out, the Tigers recorded three straight singles.
Brian Cullen’s single put South Plainfield up 1-0, while Nick Polizzano’s single made it 2-0. Shortly after, Xavier Wilson added an RBI-single of his own to make it 3-0 Tigers.
Millburn’s Richie Schiekofer had a sacrifice fly in the top of the third for the Millers, but that was the only run they were about to record.
With the victory, the Tigers are now 8-5 on the season. Millburn is also 8-5.
