South Plainfield 5, Monroe 3: The Tigers kept alive their hopes of claiming at least a share of the White Division title with an upset of the defending division champions and ace Robbie Peto.
Winning pitcher Jake Alba allowed 12 hits, fanned three and walked none. The Falcons (10-4 overall, 7-1 division) stranded nine runners.
Peto, a University of North Carolina commit, scattered nine hits, struck out seven and walked one. He was victimized by a couple of errors that led to two unearned runs.
After Monroe took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Chris Perdoni's RBI single, South Plainfield (9-6, 5-2) strung together three hits in the home half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. L.J Scarpitto, Bryan Gillen and Chris Graves singled to load the bases before Nick Polizzano delivered a clutch two-out, two-run double to left-centerfield. Peto worked out of the jam, inducing the next batter to pop into a double play on a squeeze attempt.
After Chris Hernandez' sacrifice fly made the score 2-2 in the top of the second, South Plainfield answered again. After Sean Earhardt reached first base, he advanced to second and third on two wild pitches before scoring on Kyle Dickerson's RBI single.
The Tigers took a 4-2 lead in the third when Graves reached on an error and scored on Earhardt's clutch two-out single.
South Plainfield added an insurance run in the fourth when Jack Gillis reached on an error and scored on Graves' single. Monroe closed out the scoring in the sixth on Perdoni's RBI single.
Dickerson, who returned from an injury in a loss to Monroe on Monday, is batting leadoff and will be used as a designated hitter.
