Tomei, No. 19 South Plainfield roar past Scotch Plains-Fanwood

South Plainfield, the No. 19 ranked team in the NJ.com Top-20 rankings, roared to its seventh straight win with an 11-4 victory over Scotch Plains-Fanwood in South Plainfield.

The Tigers erupted for a big 10-run second inning to take full control of the action and roll to their 13th win of the season.

Anthony Tomei had a four-RBI day at the dish for South Plainfield (13-3) with a home run. Nick Irizarry drove in two runs during the victory and Dan Kapsch and Aiden McCarthy each collected two hits at the plate for the Tigers.

Aldo Pigna recorded the win for South Plainfield with five scoreless innings of relief that saw him give up five hits and issue two walks with six strikeouts.

Jaden Carpien tallied two hits and two RBI for Scotch Plains-Fanwood (12-5) and Jack Sponheimer recorded two hits and an RBI as well for the Raiders.

South Plainfield 11, Scotch Plains-Fanwood 4

Anthony Tomei homered and drove in four runs and Aldo Pigna threw five shutout innings in relief as South Plainfield snagged the non-conference win. The Tigers (13-3) scored 10 runs in the bottom of the second to break the game open.

Pigna allowed five hits and struck out six. Aiden McCarthy went 2-for-3 and scored twice and Dan Kapsch (2-for-4) scored. Nick Irizarry singled and drove in two runs. Also adding a hit were Zack Robinson (run), Jay Alvarez (double, RBI, run), Brandon Bickunas (RBI, run) and Steve Studlack (RBI, run, double).

For the Raiders (12-5), Jack Sponheimer (RBI), Joe LaRosa, Jaden Carpien (2 RBI, run) and Ryan Quinones had two hits apiece.

South Plainfield came tearing into Wednesday's match with six straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 3.3 runs) and they left with even more momentum. They were the clear victor by an 11-4 margin over the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Raiders. For South Plainfield, this counts as revenge for the 8-3 loss Scotch Plains-Fanwood walked away with the last time they faced one another back in May of 2023.

For Scotch Plains-Fanwood's part, Jack Sponheimer made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaden Carpien, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

South Plainfield's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-3. As for Scotch Plains-Fanwood, their defeat ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 12-5.

South Plainfield will be playing in front of their home fans against St. Joseph at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. South Plainfield is facing St. Joseph at the right time seeing as St. Joseph is stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for Scotch Plains-Fanwood, they will be playing at home against Cranford at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Cranford is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.6 runs per game this season.

Today we Helmet Anthony Tomei for the punishment (grand slam) he delivered to both the opposing pitcher & wild life hiding in the woods behind the left field wall. His shot put the game out of reach & helped his mates get their 7th straight.
