The South Plainfield baseball team was in third place in the Red Division just a few short weeks ago.

But by last Friday, at the GMC Tournament seeding meeting, they were in first place, had won the division, and were awarded the top seed in the county playoffs.

This week, they became a state-ranked team, and with Saturday’s 8-3 win over fifth-seed Edison in the GMC Tournament semifinals, the Tigers have now won 12 straight games. That’s the longest current winning streak among Greater Middlesex Conference teams. They’re now 18-3 on the season, going 6-3 in their first nine.

So is anyone on a longer winning streak in the Garden State?

If you asked on Friday, we’d say two teams, but now that’s down to one.

Gloucester Catholic won its first 19 games this season before falling 2-0 Saturday in the 50th Joe Hartman Diamond Classic to Cherry Hill West (20-3).

That leaves Delsea with the state’s longest active winning streak, which is now at 17. The Crusaders are 20-1, having won their first three, then taking their first and only loss – before reeling off 17-in-a-row. They are back in action Monday against Clearview (10-10).

A couple of other schools are also on a 12-game winning streak, like South Plainfield. Seton Hall Prep and Pompton Lakes have both won 12-in-a-row. The Pirates are 18-2-1, and went 6-2-1 in their first nine games before going on their current winning streak. The Cardinals are went 6-2 in their first eight before winning a dozen straight.

And a couple of others are close. Robbinsville has won eleven in a row, and St. Peter’s Prep ten. And Emerson just had an 11-game win streak snapped Wednesday in a loss to 3-2 loss to Hackensack.
