2024 - Game # 19 South Plainfield 11, Perth Amboy 1 (5 Innings) GMC Tournament First Round

The Tigers won their eleventh straight game, rolling past the Panthers 11-1. South Plainfield (16-3) led 10-0 after two innings, and each team scored one in the fourth of a five-inning, ten-run rule affair.

Mike Castagna went the distance, throwing just 70 pitches through five, scattering five hits and giving up just a single, solitary unearned run, while striking out nine.

Brandon Bickunas knocked in three runs on a 2-for-3 day with a single and a double, while Dan Kapsch, Jayden Alvarez, Ryan Balent and Steve Sudlack each knocked in a run as well.

South Plainfield will play 8th-seed South Brunswick Wednesday in the GMC Tournament quarterfinals on Field 1 at North Brunswick Community Park, in a game that will be broadcast live on Central Jersey Sports Radio.

The Vikings beat 9th-seed St. Thomas Aquinas Monday 3-2 in 14 innings to advance.

No. 19 South Plainfield 11, Perth Amboy 1

Mike Castagna gave up four hits in five innings while striking out nine, walking three and conceding no earned runs to lead top-seeded and No. 19 in the NJ.com Top 20 South Plainfield to an 11-1 win over 17th-seeded Perth Amboy.

The Tigers (16-3) will play eighth-seeded South Brunswick in the quarterfinals at North Brunswick Community Park on Wednesday.

Brandon Bickunas went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the win while Dan Kapsch, Ryan Balent and Jayden Alvarez each had a hit and an RBI.

Jose Neris recorded a hit and a scored run for the Panthers (5-12).

Mike Castagna threw a four-hitter, allowing an unearned run to continue his outstanding junior season as the Tigers advanced.

South Plainfield (16-3) will play No. 8 South Brunswick in the quarterfinals. Monday, they put up two runs in the first inning and then broke it open with eight runs in the second.

Brandon Bickunas was 2-for-3 (3 RBIs, double, run), Nick Irizarry went 2-for-3 (2 runs) and Kevin Penny was 2-for-2 (run). Having a hit apiece in the win were Dan Kapsch (RBI, run), Zack Robinson (2 runs), Jayden Alvarez (RBI, 2 run) and Ryan Balent (RBI, run). Steve Studlack also drove in a run and scored.

For Perth Amboy (5-12), Jose Neris doubled and scored.

The Tiger approach at the plate today was fierce. Dudes like Brandon Bickunas (2-3 2b r 3rbi) Nick Irizarry (2-3b 2r sb) Kevin Penny (2-3 3b 2rbi ) did some damage. Balent Kapsch Alvarez all had rbi hits. Robinson scored 2x and took 2 bags & The Stud w an RBI and run scored.
