South Plainfield earns top GMC Tournament seed; Tigers will seek second title, first since ’18
South Plainfield has been to the GMC Tournament title game six times in its history, and the one time it won made history.
That was 2018, when the Tigers were the 14th-seed, and beat 12-seed Perth Amboy 2-1 in 12 innings.
This year, they potentially have an easier route.
South Plainfield – the GMC’s Red Division champion – took the top seed in the tourney at the league’s seeding meeting Friday morning at East Brunswick Magnet School, and the Tigers hope they’ll be back on the property again the next two Saturdays, with Ray Cipperly Field again hosting the semifinals and finals.
Filling out the top four seeds were Woodbridge, Old Bridge and Spotswood. The Barrons won the GMC White Division. Old Bridge finished second in the GMC Red, and was boosted by a home-and-home sweep of Monroe this week. Spotswood won the GMC Blue Division, and also claimed a win against a Red Division opponent, South Brunswick.
The next four teams were Edison in fifth, followed by Monroe at No. 6, Colonia seventh and South Brunswick at the No. 8 seed.
